Born Hendrik G. Meijer in 1952, he is the oldest son of Frederik G. H. Meijer, former Chairman, and the grandson of Hendrik Meijer, who founded Meijer, Inc. in 1934. It is a chain of American hypermarket which is based in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Hank graduated from the University of Michigan in 1973 with a degree in literature. He became passionate in doing historical research and in writing years after his graduation. He has written a biography of Arthur Venderberg, the US Senator who represented Michigan during World War II. He also wrote a biography of his grandfather and namesake, Hendrik Sr. The book is entitled Thrifty Years: The Life of Hendrik Meijer which was published in 1984 by Eerdmans Publishing.
