The Pekny family bought the restaurant around 1980 and have been operating it ever since. Grandma (Klara) still cooks breakfast almost every morning, and her son Peter Sr. is the head chef/bartender/owner / etc. of the establishment. The food is good and affordable and so are the drinks in the tavern. House specialties include Shell Steak, Sauerbraten, and Goulash. Soups are hot and fresh every day, and the coffee is the best in the world.

Pekny is among a growing list of people dying due to a gender reveal party. A 26-year-old Michigan man, Evan Silva, was killed when he was hit by shrapnel from a device used to reveal the sex of a baby earlier this month, according to The New York Post. A pyrotechnic device used at a gender reveals party ignited a wildfire that burned thousands of acres in Southern California.
After the wildfire, the blogger who inadvertently sparked a storm of gender reveal parties that spun out of her traditional approach is to ask people to stop. Jenna Karvunidis held one of the first gender reveals parties in 2008, according to CNN. She cut a cake to reveal the gender of her baby with pink frosting.
The concept took off, but gender reveals methods became more extreme and dangerous. She wrote on Facebook following the wildfires.
“Stop. Stop having these stupid parties,” she wrote. “For God’s sake, stop burning things to tell everyone about your son’s penis. Nobody cares more than you.”

On February 21, 2021, at approximately 11:55 a.m., Liberty State Police responded to a residence on Lt. JG Brender Freeway in the city of Liberty to receive a report of an explosion. An investigation revealed that Christopher Pekny, 28, of the city of Liberty, was building a device to be used at a children’s gender reveal party. The device exploded resulting in the death of Christopher Pekny and injuring his brother Michael Pekny, 27, also from Liberty, who was transported to Garnet Medical Center in Middletown, NY. This incident continues to be investigated by the New York State Police and the New York State Police Bomb Disposal Unit.
